On your Marks, Get Set, Go! It’s Sign-up Time!
As Ron Berger writes in his seminal book, Leaders of their Own Learning (2014), “Student engaged assessment is a system of interrelated practices that positions students as leaders of their own learning.” At The Mabin School, this looks like ongoing reflection, goal-setting, and student-led conferences. Even our report cards begin with student voice, lifting their observations about themselves as learners into the realm of formal assessment.
September and October are all about assessment: assessment of learning, assessment as learning, and assessment for learning. In November, our teachers and students begin to set goals for themselves — goals that will determine the direction of the year. On Tuesday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 10, teachers (JK-6) and students (Grades 3-6) meet with parents to articulate these goals. Goal-setting interviews are a must-attend, and we ask that every family sign-up for a goal-setting interview on these two days. These interviews are virtual, so parents can attend them from wherever they are. Sign-up is in today’s Choosing Times.
Specialist Teacher Interviews
We realize that due to the strange circumstances of COVID-19, many of you have never met your children’s specialist teachers in person! On Wednesday, November 3, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, our specialist teachers will make themselves available to meet with parents in person upstairs at The Duke of York (39 Prince Arthur Ave.) to tell you a little bit about their programs and hear from you about your children. You must be double vaccinated to attend, and please come with a mask. We are limiting the number of parents at any given time, so please sign up for one of the half hour slots offered — one half hour per family. We will treat you to drinks and munchies as you get to know your children’s specialist teachers a little bit better.
Part of the magic of The Mabin School is our approach with families: we partner with you in service of your children’s full development. Goal-setting in November and Student-Led Conferences in March are two critical times when we can work together to both influence and celebrate your children’s developmental progress — both academic and human. Thank you for joining us on this journey of growth and for trusting us to tread carefully along the way.
