SAVE THE DATES: Student-led Conferences are Coming

One of the long-standing traditions at The Mabin School is Student-Led Conferences (SLCs). This coming together of students and parents is an essential part of our learning process. Students set goals in the first term and collect evidence of learning throughout the year. At the Student-Led Conference, they share their learning with the most important people in their lives – you, their parents. This is their opportunity to show you how they have met their goals, and to determine what they need to focus on next. It is possibly the most important meeting of the year.

As Ron Berger eloquently writes in Leaders of Their Own Learning: Transforming Schools Through Student-Engaged Assessment:
“Student-engaged assessment involves students in understanding and investing in their own growth. It changes the primary role of assessment from evaluating and ranking students to motivating them to learn. It empowers students with the understanding of where they need to go as learners and how to get there. It builds the independence, critical thinking skills, perseverance, and self-reflective understanding students need for college and careers … And, because student-engaged assessment practices demand reflection, collaboration, and responsibility, they shepherd students toward becoming positive citizens and human beings.”

So, SAVE THE DATE! This year, Student-led Conferences (SLCs) will occur the week of May 16th, leading up to Mabin Day on May 19th. SLCs are a must-attend. It is imperative that parents participate in the student-led conference, and the complexity of organizing these demands that you make time on those dates. Please do not expect teachers and students to find a different date to do the conference. Your presence is required, and it is required at the times offered.

In the next Choosing Times, we will have a sign-up for SLCs, but currently the plan is as follows:

Monday, May 16th: JK/SK/Grades 1,3,5 & 6 will have conferences
Tuesday, May 17th: JK/SK/Grades 2, 4, 5 & 6 will have conferences
Wednesday, May 18th: JK/SK and Grades 1-6 will have conferences

Please look at your schedule now, and be ready to book half an hour on the relevant days. Again, organizing these conferences so that school can run while they happen is complicated, and so we appreciate you making the dates we have scheduled work for you. Conferences will be in-person, and you will have the opportunity to sign up for your slot next week.

Save the date now; you will be glad you attended. Our students always amaze us with their ability to reflect on and articulate their learning – from age 4 on. These conferences are significant, and we promise you that it will be time well-spent.
