Nancy’s Notes – 11/24/2021

COVID Vaccines for Kids Are Here!

We were very excited to hear that COVID vaccines were approved for children 5-11 last Friday. As of 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, children aged 5 to 11 across Ontario are now eligible to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment through a variety of channels including: the COVID-19 vaccination portal and contact centre; directly through public health units using their own booking system; participating pharmacies which individuals can find on Ontario’s website using the pharmacy locator; as well as select primary care providers.

To book an appointment online, children must be turning 5 years old by the end of 2021 (born in 2016). Currently, we are unable to offer vaccines at the school. If it becomes possible for us to offer a school clinic, we certainly will.

While we currently strongly recommend that all eligible students be vaccinated, we will be working with our Board and COVID Advisory Committee to determine whether or not vaccinations will be mandatory for our students in the 2022-2023 school year. We are eager to hear your thoughts on the matter, so we encourage you to let us know if you are in favour of mandatory vaccination or against. Ultimately, we will make a decision based on the advice of Toronto Public Health and the best science available to us. We hope to communicate this decision to you early in 2022.

An important reminder that unless students are fully vaccinated, Federal regulations currently require that unvaccinated travellers stay away from school for 14 days after international travel. This includes travel to the US, of course. When we return in the new year, we will be focusing our teaching on students who are in-person; however, if you are planning to go away, we would like to know so that we can coordinate support. Please complete an extended absence form as soon as possible so that our teachers can be aware of who will and will not be present when the second term begins.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
