Learning on the Go
One thing we are really good at at The Mabin School is learning on the go. A good thing too, since we are “on the go” so much these days! In our temporary space, our playspace is all off campus. We are making extensive use of the local parks and other nearby resources throughout the day.
Already we have learned so much. At The Mabin School, we pay close attention to details, and we respond accordingly. We have made some changes, therefore, both to our supervision routines and our staffing model based on our initial observations. New this week:
- All staff members on supervision duty wear safety vests so that we can easily be spotted by our students and each other.
- We have added more staff to our supervision schedule. We are finding that the most challenging part of supervision is the transition piece — getting students to and from the park. We initially had 2 teachers per “outdoor cohort” accompanying students to and from recess, and we have increased that to 2 teachers per “indoor cohort” — essentially twice as many adults supervising.
- We have bolstered our Kindergarten Team and Learning Strategies Team with two additional Early Childhood Specialists. We are very pleased to announce that Debra Hunter joined our JK team today, and Yara Salloum will be joining our SK team and our Learning Strategies team at the beginning of October.
Debra is a Registered Early Childhood Educator who also has her Bachelors in Education and is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers. She comes to us with experience from Creative Preschool and St. Clement’s Early Learning School.
Yara has a Masters of Arts in Child Study and Education, along with an Ontario Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Children with Special Needs. She has worked as an Educational Assistant at Bloorview, an Intensive Behaviour Therapist, and most recently as a co-teacher at the Jackman Institute of Child Study.
We are thrilled to welcome them both to The Mabin School.
We look forward to seeing all of you virtually at Curriculum Night tomorrow. All are welcome at our New Parents Reception at 6:30 p.m.. Then we will start all together at 7:00 p.m. so that I can tell you all about some of the exciting things that are happening this year, and then classroom presentations start at 7:30 p.m. Send me your burning questions in advance to firstname.lastname@example.org. See you soon!
